Sweet little Sofia got some bin cage updates in the last month or so, and I felt like it was time to share how her cage is looking these days!
I did something wild and maybe a bit unconventional⦠looking forward to hearing what you all think!

Little Steven Does Some Daytime Nibbling
I canβt get enough of daytime Steven. Heβs normally so fast and active. But daytime Steven can hardly keep his eyes open as he snacks!
Laverne Loves Flax Spray!
I was able to give Laverne a bit of a cage spruce up this weekend and put a few of the Oakwood Forest sprays in there for her to enjoy.
Itβs so interesting how the different hams operate and what that means for their cleaning schedule. Laverne pees a lot in her wheel, so Iβm constantly cleaning her wheels. She is also a big hoarder (even more so compared to the other hamsters). Sheβs constantly begging for food with her big, sweet eyes, it makes you think that she hasnβt eaten for weeks! β¦ until you see her giant stash!
(as I discovered this weekend when I cleaned out her cage a bit).
I thought maybe it would take some time for Lavern to figure out these flax sprays were food, but in retrospect, I should have known she would get to them right away! From now on I may need to ration these to herβ¦. sheβs just such a hungry girl!
Hamster Weigh-in
Today I took Laverne and Sofia to get their nails trimmed. Even thought they have lots to dig in and climb through, these girls just have long nails!
I decided it was a great time to weigh them.
I weighed them in the carrier before we left for the vet and then the carrier alone (once they were in their cages).
Sofia weighed in at 30 grams today! I think sheβs looking a little rounder these days, so Iβd like to keep an eye on that. It looks like a robos weight can have a wide range, somewhere between 25-43 grams is healthy.
(Steven weighed 40 this week, so keeping an eye on him! Although he is a much bigger robo).
Now for Laverne:
346-292 = 54 grams
According to various sources on the internet, 43-57 g is the average range for a dwarf hamster, so sheβs doing well.
The vet tech said both hammies were so sweet and didnβt bite! She said she hardly sees dwarf hamsters who donβt bite, so that was a nice compliment! Well done, girls! π
My First Oakwood Forest Purchase!
Oakwood Forest is that hamster brand all hamster lovers oo and ahh over. Itβs such a luxurious treat, particularly for those of us in the USA, where good quality hamster products can be a little harder to come by.
Oakwood Forest is based in the Netherlands so shipping can be a bit pricey. I happened to get a monetary Christmas gift this year, so I decided to spend it on a big box of dried flowers and sprays!

Natural Hamster Haul!
Letβs face it, thereβs nothing natural about the fact that I live in Southern California wirh four hamsters living in many plastic bins all around my apartment.
Thereβs nothing natural about hamsters running on hamster wheels.
...And Iβm pretty sure hamsters do not naturally come in contact with coconuts π΄ .
Just because itβs natural doesnβt mean itβs healthy (for example, cotton fiber is quite dangerous for hamsters to use as bedding material).
The point of saying all this is- whether you are using natural or man made hamster products, the important part is to make sure they are safe for your hamster. Read reviews, Hamster Forums or ask the hamsterGram community!
I decided to buy some (researched & safe!) natural products primarily to give my hamsters new textures and shapes to interact with. Natural products like cork rounds, coconut hides and other wooden items give my hams new stimulation and enrichment.
I really loved all the items I bought and highly recommend! All of my hamsters seem to enjoy these products (in fact, Laverne is asleep in one of the cork rounds as I write this!). They are also very cost effective!

I feel like I will probably have endless videos of Shirley being adorbs while she explores our home. She is just too cute and sweet and itβs so fun to see her just take off running and having fun.
Hamster Care on a Budget: Thrifting for my πΉ Hamsters
Hello!
While I do love to splurge on some fancy hamster things from time to time, the reality is I am just a regular gal trying to make ends meet and I donβt always have the money to buy the latest Niteangel product.
I still want to provide great care for my hams and give them a rich and stimulating life, so Iβve been thinking π€ of creative ways to do this.
This week I decided to stop by my local second hand shop (Goodwill shop) to see what I could find that was ham-appropriate.
I did find a few things that have become very handy!
How do you provide enrichment for hour hamsters without spending a lot of $$?
Sleepy Steven
My favorite moments with little Steven are the mornings when he decides to come out. Usually he comes out so that he can have some chew time with his whimzee and sometimes lingers in hopes of a snack from us :).
I just love his little curious nose!
Hurricane Steven
I came home from work this week to find that Steven, the Roborovski hamster, had fully destroyed his sand bath area. I had to find out what exactly happened so I reviewed the day's footage on my Wyze Pet Cam.
I found the events that occurred so amusing and adorable, I had to share!

Shirley Play Time
Our favorite place to play with Shirley is on the couch. She canβt get between the cushions or climb the sides, and he gets a pretty good space to run. Plus, we can get eye level with her and really experience all her cuteness!
Shirley Gets Some Free-Roam Time
Lately we have realized that a great place to let Shirley, the dwarf hamster, free roam and have some hamster playtime, is on the couch.
She can't get between the cushions and we can catch her before she goes off an edge (although she tends to be careful and this is rarely something we need to do).
The couch is also micro suede, so she can't easily climb it.
It's nice too, because we can sit down and be more eye to eye with her.
Creating a Budget Friendly Play Bin for my Dwarf Hamsters πΉ
I decided it was time to spruce up Laverne & Shirleyβs play bin area.
They no longer live in the same enclosure- Shirley was bullying Laverne, which is interesting because Shirley is the sweet hamster and Laverne is much more apt to bite⦠but maybe because she has gotten used to defending herself?
However, they do share a play area (although not at the same time). I also often connect their play area to one of their enclosures using hamster tunnels so they can enjoy exploring it on their own at night.
In order to create my budget friendly hamster play bin I have been collecting clean, small boxes for the past few weeks specifically for hamster use! While there are lots of great products to buy for your hamster (I personally just splurged on some gorgeous hamster foraging items from Europe I hope get soon!) I think many hamsters are very happy to enjoy the simple pleasure of exploring small nooks and crannies, sprinkled with snacks.
I spent $0 on this hamster play bin and I think (I hope!) my dwarf hamsters are really loving it!

Hamster Starter Kits!
Hi Hamster Friends!
This has been a dream of mine for a while now- to create a βkitβ of curated items to help limit down the overwhelm of a new hamster owner (or one just looking to do some upgrades).
I bought so many things I didnβt need, that didnβt work, that werenβt right for hamsters, as I struggled to figure out what hamster items were safe and appropriate.
SO! I finally did it. I did the work for you! Of course this isnβt the end all of what you need or would want for a great hamster enclosure- I like to think that one never fully achieves completion and is always striving for improvements- but I think itβs a pretty good start!

Picking Up Shirley
Our bond and understanding of Shirley has grown so much!
She has even started this funny thing where she licks our hands (anyone else experience this? It is beyond cute!).
We normally pick up all of our hamsters using a cup first. Even if they are okay with hands, sometimes having a hand pick you up is just too scary for our hamsters.
But Shirley lately has started just totally giving in to being picked up, it's almost comical the way she just relaxes her body and waits to be scooped up. What a funny girl!
I know understand how much personality hamsters have! Laverne, Shirley's sister & identical twin, is very active and spunky but is not a fan of hands scooping her up.
Both girls are territorial, Shirley is usually only territorial in the area where she sleeps. Laverne is definitely more territorial and generally more likely to bite or swat, she does do better once sheβs outside of her enclosure.
Shirley Gets a New Bin Cage (and the Prevue 9.5β Quiet Wheel!)
Hello hamster πΉ friends!
Todayβs RGH short is of Shirley, one of my foster dwarf hamsters.
Shirley came with her sister, Laverne at the end of Nov, 2020. Originally they shared an enclosure. I watched them very carefully for a week or two and it seemed that Shirley was bullying Laverne a bit (resulting in a more aggressive & fearful Laverne). By the time I decided to separate them, Shirley had taken over both hamster hides and Laverne was sleeping in a pile of bedding next to the hide. I had also heard a few squabbles over wheels and hides. I never saw any bites but I didnβt want to take any risks (since I canβt always see them!).
Laverne has done very well post-separation. She has begun coming out more and more and seemingly wants to interact with us.
Shirley at first seemed to struggle little more with the separation, but after a few weeks she has come out of her shell and is such a doll!
When I separated them I left Laverne in the 200 qt bin and moved Shirley into a 100 qt bin. This video is of Shirley checking out her new digs (and new wheel!). It was filmed in mid-December, 2020 (sorry, it took me a bit to get this up!). I had to put together Shirleyβs bin very quickly and I realized after filming this video that she needed more bedding! So, I moved a few things around to provide 8β deep of paper bedding on one side of the bin.

Stevenβs 200 qt Bin Cage Tour
Little Steven, the Roborovski hamster also got a Niteangel Multi-Chamber Hide for Christmas 2020!
Just like for Sofia, I originally installed it over a large sand bath. Steven, however, is less neat and organized than Sofia, and his mult-chamber hide over sand turned into one, giant, whiz palace.
It actually was such a mess that I decided to take the mult-chamber hide out and wash it before I gave it back to him and placed it in the cage arrangement shown in this video.
This new setup seems to be working pretty well. Steven seems interested in all the new things and Iβve begun hiding seeds in various little nooks for him to enjoy finding.
I by no means feel that my bin cage is βdoneβ or perfect! This is a work in progress and probably always will be, as I will want to give Steven an enriched life while adjusting his surroundings to meet his needs. I felt that it would be helpful to document and share my bin-cage set-up progression for anyone who has hamsters or is looking to get one.

Sofia in the Digging Play Bin
I created a βdigging binβ for Steven & Sofia a few months ago, and it continues to be a great place to provide some out of cage enrichment without worry about losing them in a small crevice.
Both Steven and Sofia are fairly nervous little creatures (Sofiaβs curiosity can overcome her nervousness though), so having a consistent space they come to I believe has helped it feel safe to them. I do try to update it slightly with new items for variety, but since they only spend about 10 minutes at a time in the bin, Iβm not too worried about it being boring to them.
Sofia in particularly loves to hunt for seeds, so this bin works perfectly. I just sprinkle a few throughout the bin and she does to town digging all over! It is really quite adorable to watch.
Hope you enjoy!
